Overview
The PubMed Abstract widget downloads and displays the abstract for a paper identified by a PubMed ID within a Labii record. It is designed for literature review, protocol background, and experiment planning workflows where researchers need the paper abstract available directly in the ELN or LIMS without opening PubMed separately. Once the widget is linked to a PMID column, Labii can automatically retrieve the abstract, store it for later use, and show it in a read-only section for convenient reference.

Interface
Read-only View
In read-only mode, the widget displays the saved abstract text for the current paper. This is the main consumption view for scientists who want quick access to the publication summary without editing the section. If the abstract has already been retrieved and stored, the widget simply shows it as part of the record.
Data Display: Shows the abstract text associated with the current record's PubMed ID.
Navigation: Supports record-level review of publication details alongside other sections and columns.
Export Options: The widget does not provide a dedicated export action for abstracts.
Search/Filter: Search is handled by the surrounding record or table tools rather than inside the widget itself.
Edit View
In edit or configure mode, users define which column contains the PMID value that the widget should use for the lookup. This is typically a one-time setup for a table or template. After the PMID column is selected, the widget can use that value to retrieve and refresh the abstract when the paper record is opened or updated.
Input Methods: Select the column that stores the PubMed ID for the current table.
Formatting Options: The edit view focuses on configuration rather than text formatting.
Validation: The widget requires a valid PMID column mapping; if the column is missing or invalid, the abstract cannot be retrieved correctly.
Collaboration: Once configured, all users of the table or template can view the same abstract retrieval behavior consistently.
Configuration
Initial Setup
The PubMed Abstract widget must know which column contains the paper's PMID. In Labii Reference Manager, this mapping is already preconfigured, so no extra setup is usually required.
Add the PubMed Abstract widget to a section in the target record layout or table template.
Open the widget in Edit mode or click the configuration control.
Select the column that stores the PubMed ID for the record.
Save the configuration and open a record with a valid PMID to let the widget retrieve the abstract.
Required Settings
PMID Column: Select the column that stores the PubMed ID. The widget uses this value to query PubMed and retrieve the paper abstract.
Optional Settings
Preconfigured Reference Manager Setup: In Labii Reference Manager, the PMID column mapping is already configured, so users can typically use the widget without additional setup.
If you are using the standard Labii Reference Manager application, the PubMed Abstract widget is already configured to use the PMID column.
Advanced Configuration
For reusable table templates, configure the PMID column once at the template level so every new paper record inherits the correct abstract lookup behavior.
Open the table template or record layout where paper records are created.
Add the widget and map it to the correct PMID column before the template is published to users.
If the widget is mapped to the wrong column, or if no valid PMID is present in the record, PubMed abstract retrieval will fail or show an error.
Additional Functions
Automatic Abstract Download
After the widget is configured, Labii automatically downloads the abstract when the record is opened and the abstract is not already stored locally.
Open a record that contains a valid PMID in the configured column.
Allow the widget to query PubMed and retrieve the abstract.
Review the downloaded abstract in the section once it is displayed.
Update Abstract
If the PMID changes or the saved abstract needs to be refreshed, users can trigger a new retrieval.
Update the PMID value in the configured column if needed.
Click Update Abstract in the widget.
Review the newly downloaded abstract in the read-only section.
Cached Storage for Retrieval
Once downloaded, the abstract is stored in Labii for later retrieval so the record can continue showing the abstract without requiring users to re-enter the paper details manually.
Integration with Paper Records
The widget works especially well in paper-tracking workflows where the same record also stores citation metadata such as title, authors, journal, DOI, and related identifiers.

Data Quality
Use authoritative PMID values copied directly from PubMed or trusted citation sources.
Standardize the PMID column across paper tables so widget configuration stays consistent.
Verify the PMID when an abstract fails to load before troubleshooting the widget itself.
